Candles

The should ensure that matches or a working candle-lighter is provided on the W.M.'s pedestal and that the candles on the S.W. and J.W.'s pedestals are in good condition (and if applicable, filled with oil).

If it is impractical for the Wardens to move their candles then they may take their light by way of wax tapers.

The Wardens light (if using tapers) or position their candles only after entering their pedestal under the arch formed bythe Deacons' wands.

The lights must be renewed in a similar manner when required.

It should be noted that our early Brethren had neither gas nor electric lights; these have no Masonic symbolism and should not be used for ritualistic purposes.

Wands

When wands are arched, it is the Deacon in charge whose wand goes in front. This is usually the Deacon standing on the right.

Wands are held between the fingertips, with the elbow at a right-angle; the weight of the wand holding it upright, not the Deacon's fist.

V.S.L.

The V.S.L. may be opened in the First Degree at Ruth, chapter II, in the Second Degree at 2 Chronicles, chapter III, in the Third Degree at 1 Kings, chapter VII and at Installation at Amos, chapter VII.

The V.S.L. and the arms of the S. should face the Candidate.

The Inner Guard

The door to the Temple should be locked form the inside by the when closed.

When anyone is desirous of leaving the Temple, the should precede them to the door, open it, and close and lock it after their departure.

After giving the knocks, if the T. is absent or fails to reply, the should open the door and visually ascertain the secrurity of the Temple before reporting to the J.W.
It is not necessary for the to give “dummy” knocks on behalf of an absent T.

Prayers and Obligations

During prayers and O's., in all Degrees, the Brethren will stand with the r.h. on the l.b.; the sign of reverenece or prayer. During prayers, the t. should be hidden; during O's. the t. should be in the form of a S.

The will deliver all prayers as well as those partos of the ritual in his name. In the abnsence of a Chaplain, the W.M. or a P.M. will deliver them.

Prayers do not need to be memorised and may be read.
